I could see that her legs were missing - there were just 2 stumps below each kneecap. Unsure what to do as I didn’t want to disturb her, I started treading water and watched - I couldn’t help myself. She yanked off her swimming cap and goggles, placed them beside her and then methodically attached one prosthetic leg and then the other to her upper thighs. She slipped them on so nonchalantly - the smile that played on her lips suggested she enjoyed knowing that the people who could see her had stopped to stare.
